MAYOR'S MESSAGE

A once in a lifetime storm should not dictate how homeowners can develop and renovate their properties. But that's exactly what happened when FEMA's post-Katrina mapping put 90% of the city in a flood zone. The substantial improvement rule makes it so homeowners can't spend more than 50% of the home's value on maintenance/renovations without elevating the property to meet FEMA regulations and it's killing our neighborhoods. The majority of these homes never flooded before Katrina and haven't since. With the support of the Jackson County Economic Development Foundation and M&M Bank, we worked together to form a coalition comprised of community leaders to seek much needed and long overdue change. You can read my op-ed about what we're dealing with and how we're being treated differently than our neighbors in Alabama here. We appreciate the support of the Mississippi Congressional delegation as we share our story with Congress and ask them to take action. You can help by sharing your story or sending a letter to Congress. Click here to get involved.

HOOPS 4 HOPE - COMMUNITY 4 UNITY

Hoops 4 Hope was created in 2018 as a way to build better relationships between law enforcement and teens. There were two successful basketball events before COVID put a stop to the program. On June 4, Hoops 4 Hope made a comeback at the Pascagoula Recreation Center. Teens and officers from the Pascagoula Police Department, Moss Point Police Department, and the Jackson County Sheriff's Office played a morning full of friendly games. They all shared a meal cooked by the Pascagoula Men's Club afterwards. Thanks to a grant from Mississippi Power and several other sponsors (M&M Bank, United Way, Pascagoula & Moss Point Rotary Clubs, and Mark Everson), this was the first of four Community 4 Unity sporting events to be held with law enforcers and teens in Pascagoula and Moss Point over a 12 month period. Be on the lookout for more information on the next event in the fall.
