The Water
Division of Public Works has an office at 4011 14th Street. This division's
primary goal is to provide you with safe potable drinking water. It
is constantly monitoring the water wells within the city to ensure
the quality and quantity of water that is provided to your home is
not only adequate, but meets all safety guidelines. It is also
responsible for maintaining or replacing all lines within the city
up to your property line.
The city of Pascagoula's water supply comes from
various aquifers located deep beneath the ground, some as deep as
700 feet or more. This groundwater seeps down, filtering slowly for
years through sand and tiny cracks in rock formations and forming
uncountable underground reservoirs. These reservoirs can be tapped
with wells to provide a source of water. We utilize this water
through 10 different water wells. In 1999, we began filtering
our plentiful groundwater with a system known as RO/Ozone
filtration. From there, pumps send the water to the taps
in your home.
Our water is monitored monthly by the
Mississippi State Department of Health for any biological activity,
including E Coli, with samples taken throughout the city. Chlorine
content is also checked across the system by the operators and is
maintained at the levels requested by the Department of Health who
inspect, sample and tour the system regularly. This level is
designed to provide safe water even after a pipe has broken. This
allows you to know that your water is safe even if we experience a
major water line repair.

The City of
Pascagoula has a Cross-Connection Control
Policy as required by the Safe Drinking Water Act. Cross
connections usually occur by accident. Suppose, for instance, that
you are washing your dog. Suddenly, the dog runs off chasing fire
engines down the street. In your haste, you drop the running hose
down into the bucket of soapy wash water thus creating a cross
connection. As the firefighters attack the blaze, the fire trucks
attach a suction to the hydrant creating a vacuum within the water
main. The water in the bucket could then be sucked into the water
main - soap, fleas and all! You, and your neighbors have just
experienced backflow.
In order to prevent this possibility
from occurring, backflow preventers
are part of the City's Cross-Connection Control Policy. For further
information about this policy and its implementation, you may call
938-6618 to set up an appointment.
As with
the gas crews, the water crews that may be working in your area
can't affect your utility bill. The water must go through your meter
to be reflected on your monthly bill. The city is responsible for
the water mains and lines up to your meter. There are also various
services which are provided with a charge by your City Water
Division. For these rates and any questions or clarifications,
please call the Public Works Department 938-6257 during normal
working hours.
