Market Street Improvements

The City of Pascagoula is currently developing plans to make much needed improvements to Market Street.  The idea is to convert Market Street to a boulevard concept that includes contiguous sidewalks, bike lanes, parallel parking, landscaping, and two roundabouts.  It also aims to calm traffic, which is intended not only to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists, but also increase visibility of businesses.  While it is true that roundabouts are hard to come by in the United States, they have proven to reduce the rate of fatal car accidents and personal injuries that come as a result of accidents.  To learn more about roundabouts, see the video below from the Federal Highway Administration.

The designs below are conceptual and may change.  For now, the City is moving forward with Areas 1 & 3.  The Department of Community & Economic Development will be scheduling meetings with Market Street business owners starting in May to solicit input for Area 3.  Meetings with business owners outside of Area 3 will be scheduled when the time draws closer to moving forward with their respective areas.  There is a public hearing in the works for later in May or in June of 2016.  In the meantime, the public is welcome to submit their comments on the plans below by emailing them to info [at] cityofpascagoula.com.  Simply click on the images to enlarge.
