Where are smoke detectors required in my home?
In residential dwellings, smoke alarms shall be installed in the following locations:

- 1. On the ceiling or wall outside of each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of bedrooms.
- 2. In each room used for sleeping purposes.
- 3. In each story within a dwelling unit, including basements but not including crawl spaces and uninhabitable attics. [Call the Fire Department at (714) 288-2500 for information regarding split levels.]

See listing sheets included with smoke alarms at time of purchase for additional, recommended locations, as well as important and specific mounting instructions. Read the sheet carefully to avoid installing the smoke alarms in areas prone to producing false alarms.
